On Friday the 14th, the Idaho State University campus is pleased to host the first annual Orange Arts Festival in the ISU Ballroom of the Pond Student Union Building. Admittance is free, and the music starts at 6 p.m.

On the bill for the Orange Arts Festival music entertainment: indie acoustic rock and folk bands Spondee, A.W. Feldt, Warbonnet, Greyhouse Effect and Nyr Lif.

Friday night, The Trademark headlines at Tony’s Billiards all-ages venue in Blackfoot. The evening starts at 7 p.m.; cost is $5 at the door. The Trademark is playing with Alterus, Never Cast Anchor, and A Blinding Spyre.

The Trademark, based in Pleasant Grove, Utah, is a rock, kind of pop punk band. Brothers Riley and Drew Hamnett and Natty Coleman have persisted since junior high, making a name for themselves as one of the best independent rock bands in Utah. They’re first full-length album, “This Island Earth,” was released in December of 2007, and is now available on iTunes.

"Every song on our record sounds like it could've been produced by a different band," said Drew Hamnett, bassist for The Trademark. "Our music has transformed into something that's really broad, with everything from heavy breakdowns to melodic harmonies."

They’re also pretty clean cut for a rock band - no piercings and no tattoos. "We want people to listen to our stuff and realize that you don't have to fit a cookie-cutter idea of what a rocker should be to create good music."

What I like most about The Trademark’s music is that their sound seems familiar, but imitates no other band. They truly have created their own unique sound. The vocals have been described as “harsh-but-clean.” No two songs sound the same, but the all-over feel of their music is cohesive. And that’s really saying something about a band in this genre.

At Portneuf Valley Brewing this wkend, acoustic singer/songwriter Bruce Bowman from Pocatello, will perform original and acoustic rock and pop favorites on Friday night. And on Saturday night, Elephant Revival Concept from Boulder, Colorado is back performing totally original acoustic Colorado bluegrass, roots reggae and mountain hip-hop. Both shows have no cover and they start at 8 p.m.

On Saturday night the 15th, Dave Easley makes his Pocatello debut performance at the First National Bar on West Center Street. Cost at the door is $5, and the music starts at 9 p.m. Easley is a solo performer on pedal steel guitar, regular guitar, midi steel, voice and digital loop.

“I tend to get some sort of loop going early in the song and then do stuff on top of that.” Easley said, “I play a little rhythm while singing the first verse then add some bass notes while singing the second verse, then switch to the organ-steel sound for the solo. In the Grateful Dead type songs, like the Dead, I never know how they're going to come out until I do them.”

Born in Hilo, Hawaii, and raised in Illinois, Easley has lived in the New Orleans area for 20 years. He’s played with Coco Robicheaux, The Heartifacts, 3 Now 4 and Shannon McNally. He’s played the Montreal Jazz fest twice, the New Orleans Jazz fest many times, and the jazz room at the International Steel Guitar Convention.

At this Saturday’s show, expect a mix of originals and covers from Jimmy Cliff, Dylan and definitely some Grateful Dead. Easley is also influenced by jazz and blues from Coltrane and Sam Rivers. His originals range stylistically as much as the covers, but in this, you’ll find some common ground.
