POCATELLO — You won’t see one of their music videos on MTV and you probably won’t hear one of their songs on the radio, but that’s just fine to the five guys in hed (p.e.).
In fact, the guys in this hip-hop rock band care more about getting their message out than getting radio or TV airplay.
“My message to the youth is there is a lot more than meets the eye and it’s time for everyone to really examine their own place in history as human beings and you’ll never get it from television or public schools,” said singer Jared in a recent interview with the Journal, “Everyone needs to get on the Internet and study underground media, research their resources and find out what’s really going on on this planet.”
This underground activist band will be performing in Pocatello at the Pond Student Union Building Ballroom at Idaho State University on Tuesday, Dec. 11 alongside fellow Californina-based rock band Insolence and local hard-hitters Neckbrace.
Since the release of the first EP in 1995, (hed) p.e. has often come under fire for their strong and sometimes graphic lyrical content.
“It’s for each individual to make his own opinion so I can’t invalidate someone’s opinion,” said Jared of the criticism, “From the guy who wrote the words’ perspective, is that I’m not trying to be vicious and it’s kind of like a conversation that I’m having with my friends.”
He also added, “Christian people are more concerned with cursing than the fact that we’re sending guys to their deaths,” referring to the war in Iraq.
Jared is very adamant on the ideas of free speech and free will. So much so, in fact, that in 2004 he made the discussion to leave Jive Records, the band’s original label, due to conflicts in interest.
“I had dudes at the label having meetings with me and trying to get me to change my lyrics or come up with hit songs and it was not where my heart was. They wanted me to forget about hip hop. They had me feeling like I was clocking in over there, just trying to give them what they wanted instead of doing what I wanted. It made me find out who I was as an artist.
Surprisingly, hed (p.e.) has had few changes in their band line-up although they have been together for over ten years. One of the few changes has been in the group’s drummers, but Jared says that this line-up is more than likely here to stay.
“We’ve got some sweet chemistry now with Tiny, our new drummer. It’s the sweetest chemistry we’ve ever had, we are explosive on stage,” he said.
You may not have heard of them, but (hed) p.e. has heard of Pocatello. The band played here in excess of five times in the late ‘90’s. Although they haven’t performed on this side of the state for awhile, Jared said they are excited to be coming back.
“Thanks to all our Idaho fans, we love you guys so much, they gotta come out to  the show and we’ll have a great time,” he said.
Insolence was formed in San Jose, Cali. in 1995 and released their first album, “Within” in 1996. Their seventh studio album, “Audio War” was released earlier this year. They blend the sounds of rock, hip-hop and reggae together to form their own unique sound.
Nick Poppleton, singer for the Pocatello metal band Neckbrace said he is excited about being able to open up for the two bands.
“It’s a huge show for us, probably the biggest show we’ve ever played,” he said.
