Thank you for helping us remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice to keep us free. Dec. 15, 2007 will mark the 16th year 5,000 wreaths have been donated to adorn the headstones of those buried at Arlington, in appreciation of veterans and the sacrifices they made for their country.
The 96th Composite Squadron, Pocatello will be hosting the 2nd annual “Wreaths Across America” at The South East Idaho Veterans Memorial in Pocatello At 10am sharp in conjunction with Arlington National Cemetery.
2007 marks the second year of the expansion of the Arlington Wreath Project with a new national campaign called Wreaths Across America (www.wreathsacrossamerica.org).
This years event will see many squadrons participating throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico as Worcester Wreath tapped CAP to help coordinate events across the country.
The project began humbly enough. In 1992, Worcester Wreath faced a 4,000-wreath oversupply as the end of the season neared. Remembering a boyhood trip to the nations capital, and the striking image of Arlington with its neat, white rows marking the graves of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, Morrill Worcester struck upon an idea.
Arrangements were made and soon the wreaths were traveling south on transportation donated by BlueBird Ranch Trucking Co. of Jonesboro, Maine. The Maine State Society in Washington, D.C., helped coordinate volunteers for the wreath laying, and a tradition was born.
Fifteen years and more than 60,000 wreaths later, as word spread about the Arlington Wreath Project, Worcester was struck by the interest and enthusiasm for the event. A common theme emerged in the hundreds of e-mails, letters and phone calls thanking the company for its donation as the tribute means as much to the living as those who had been lost.
The 96th Composite Squadron was informed about this event going nation wide last year and I was tasked to make this happen here in Pocatello again this year. If you have any questions about this event please call me at (208) 244-2620.
