To Dream of Bright Tomorrows

By: Mary Keating

POCATELLO—Hundreds of donations and many helping hands bring the dream of brighter tomorrows to children in our community.

Since 1984, Bright Tomorrows has worked directly with victims of child sexual abuse and their families. They have been commitment to helping children and their families heal from the trauma of abuse, addressing the emotional and mental needs of victims through counseling and supportive services, assisting them to live happier lives, and to restore the laughter, joy, hopes and dreams of childhood.

Pocatello is a growing community and the number of children in crisis and in need of services is continuing to grow. Due to serious limitations of their former facility, as well as the need to provide timely and effective services to victims, Bright Tomorrows looked to the community for support and help.    “We could never have reached our dream of a child advocacy center in Pocatello had it not been for the incredible support of this community and we cannot thank everyone enough,” said Kathy Downes, Executive Director. “Bill Isley spearheaded this dream and many of our thanks go to him and his crew. Our new home represents a major commitment on behalf of our community to heal the pain caused by sexual abuse.”

National studies have shown that one in four girls and one in six boys (21 percent of all children) will be sexually abused by the age of 18. The effects of abuse can last a lifetime for child sexual abuse survivors. Cumulative effects of abuse not only cost the individuals affected, but also our community and society.

It is important for parents to be educated and to understand the causes of sexual abuse. Parents should supervise their children and give them permission to refuse touching. Allow children to say no when they don’t feel like being hugged or kissed by certain individuals. Parents must be approachable and sensitive to the needs of their children, and talk to them about safety issues.

Parents who talk to their children about personal safety can be extremely effective in assuring that their children do not become victims.

Communities need a coordinated effort between the professionals who respond to abuse (law enforcement, child protection, prosecution, medical and mental health). Bannock County has been working hard to strengthen this coordinated response. Professionals meet on a regular basis to ensure cases of child sexual abuse are being handled well and ‘not falling through the cracks.’

Bright Tomorrows, along with these professionals, implemented the child advocacy center model in 2006 to ensure a sensitive and child-friendly environment in which children are interviewed about their abuse. In August of 2007, many of the critical services are housed at Tuscany House.

Bright Tomorrows is also available to the community for information or to answer questions. To learn more, Tuscany House, the new home for the Bright Tomorrows Child Advocacy Center, located at 409 Washington Ave will hold an open house November 16 from 3:30-6:30 For more information, visit www.brighttomorrowscac.org or call 234-2646.
