High Heals: Why Women Wear Them, Why Men Like Them

Women across the country strap on a pair of high heels to venture off into the world and persevere through the pain, even though our culture doesn’t demand they wear them.  Yet, day after day thousands of women “strap on the stilettos” to venture through their day. Why do women really put themselves through that “cruel and unusual punishment”?  Advertisements would lead everyone to believe that when a woman straps on a pair of heels she’s instantly confident and sexy, and that every man finds a woman in heels attractive, but are they right?  Do women really wear heels to feel sexy?  Do men really find women more attractive if they wear heels?  Let’s put these theories to the test.

Most of the women said they wore high heels about once a week for either dress up, fashion or both as their reasoning.

Carrie Anderson, however, mentioned that she wore high heels “just for the heck of it,” and that most of her “heels are bright colored or fun.”

Does color really have anything to do with attractiveness though?  The men answered that question with an undivided answer.  Of the three that gave a “preferred” high heel color, all three stated they liked red heels. 

“I like red and black… just because I find those colors sexy,” said Benjamin Greenway, 19.  “Kind of weird that a color can be sexy…”

Most of the men, in addition to liking red heels, felt that high heel height was related to women’s political views.

“I’ll admit it, I tend to think that women with longer high heels tend to be more liberal,” admitted Anthony Andrews, 22.

Twenty-two year old Aubrey Jensen, a four-inch heel wearer said, “they hurt my feet, but I like the way they make my feet look.”

She, however, is not the only one that likes the way they make her feet look.  Three of the five men mentioned that as their reason for finding women wearing high heels attractive. 

Michael Brown, 20, said, “it’s a leg and shoe thing; it’s just really attractive.” 

Anthony Andrews commented, “it is possibly due to the fact that you can see more of the foot in high heels, so it creates an optical illusion that the legs are longer and I tend to like women with long legs.”

All five women agreed that when they wear heels they feel more feminine.  Two of the women said when they wear heels they feel sexy, and one even went so far as to say she wears them because she knows guys like them.

They make “me feel feminine and sexy,” stated Brittany West, 21.

I wear them “to show off my girly side,” added 20-year-old Carrie Anderson.

Something about high heels makes women feel sexy and feminine, but one wonders if men like the confidence women have while they wear them, or if they have the confidence because they know men like them.  This sounds like the “chicken and the egg” paradox. 

So why do women really wear heels, and why do men really find them attractive… the world may never know.
