Idaho State Civic Symphony listeners’ ears are in new hands with the integration of more student musicians and the arrival of two temporary directors. The Symphony was established in the early 1900s, and is the oldest orchestra in the state of Idaho.
The symphony currently includes roughly 18 students, and will try to incorporate more students in the future as well.
Michael Benner, who plays third trumpet, feels that student involvement is essential to the growth of the music department and that the experience gives students a chance to play pieces they may not get to in other ensembles.
“[Incorporating students is] a good idea - good for the students, university, and community,” said Dr. Patrick Brooks. “With the change in directors, the orchestra is looking to involve more students in the future.”
Benner has been involved in the symphony for about a year, and feels that students make a positive contribution.
“With age comes maturity to be sure, but with youth comes energy that helps keep some of the older members on their toes,” said Benner. “It also allows older and more experienced members of the symphony a chance not only to perform but to instruct.”
Dr. Thom Ritter George, former professor at Idaho State University, retired unexpectedly late in the summer. He had served as conductor of the symphony for over 20 years, and his reasons for retiring remain unclear.
“I don’t know why he left so suddenly,” said Brooks.
Brooks, Director of Bands at Idaho State University, and Monte Grise, Associate Director of Bands at Idaho State University, volunteered to fill the conductor position temporarily until a permanent conductor could be chosen. “The former director, Dr. George, retired late in the summer,” said Brooks. “Mr. Grise and I volunteered to help fill in.”
Benner, a senior at Idaho State University, believes “the change [in leadership] will breathe fresh, new energy into the symphony.”
A Music Department search committee will choose the new conductor. This committee consists of four faculty members (including Brooks) and two members of the Symphony Board.
Brooks will conduct three of the symphony’s concerts this year and another 14 performances with other music groups.
The Idaho State Civic Symphony will perform five concerts this year: Oct. 3, 2007; Oct. 17, 2007; Dec. 5, 2007; Feb. 20, 2008; and April 23, 2008. All concerts will be held in the Joseph C. and Cheryl Jensen Grand Concert Hall of the L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center starting at 7:30 pm.
