Ah, the week before Halloween! Live music and parties abound in the area, folks. So here’s the heads up on where to be when.

To start off the week, the local indie rock band Spondee has a free concert at the brand new Rendezvous Complex on the Idaho State University campus, at noon on Thursday the 25th, with a follow-up show at the College Market at noon on the 30th. Preview what this band has to offer at www.myspace.com/spondee123.

On Friday the 26th, the popular local band, Swingshift will be performing jazz, rock and pop at Portneuf Valley Brewing starting at 8 p.m. I’m told that the pub has rearranged the furniture to make more room for the dancers. Even the local musicians hail Swingshift as a group comprised of the area’s best talent. Check out Swingshift online at www.geocities.com/swingshift_jazz.

And to our north on Friday, Monster Energy drinks presents The Dead Man’s Party 2007, with the Idaho Falls-based progressive metal band Blood Dog and the Rexburg-based rock band Fortunate Son at The Tropics in Idaho Falls. Cost is $5, and the show starts at 8 p.m., open to all ages. They promise costume giveaways and prizes from The Buzz Shop, Mike’s Music and more.

From their website, Blood Dog boasts, “As a band, we have the biggest sound and light show of any other band in South East Idaho.” Bold words! Check out Blood Dog’s music at www.myspace.com/theblooddogpit.

Fortunate son has been featured on the internet radio station Phibble, more than once. They’ve made a name for themselves in the area with great covers of classic rock songs and some originals, playing all over the area, including last summer’s BFE concert at Sandy Downs. For more information, visit www.myspace.com/fortunate1son.

On Saturday the 27th, also known as “The Halloween for Grown-Ups”, there are choices, choices and more choices for live music.

Idaho State University is hosting a fabulous concert of regional bands. Bank, In:Aviate, Tuscan Red and Jake Tillo from Elliston are on the bill to play the Ballroom at the Pond Student Union Building, starting at 7 o’clock. Admission is $7 or $5 for ISU students.

Jake Tillo opens the show, a young singer / songwriter from Idaho Falls, playing mostly folk-style music. Tuscan Red, from Middleton, ID, is a four-piece indie screamo band. Get more information at www.myspace.com/tuscanred.

Bank is an indie rock band from Boise, a four-piece with a very pop, almost ambient sound. Visit their website at www.myspace.com/banktheband.

I’m most eager to see In:Aviate again. I caught one of their shows in Salt Lake about a month ago and was hugely impressed. They’re a five-piece rock band from St. George, UT, with a kind of indie pop sound. Vocals are high and melodic, and the guitar is growling, just exactly what young audiences are listening for. One set from In:Aviate is worth twice the price of admission. Please find out more about this hot act at www.myspace.com/inaviate.

For those of you who were at The First National Bar last weekend, you will want to follow The SnakeOil Stompers, Pocatello’s one and only rock band with a New Orleans flair, for their performance in the Voodoo Lounge at BJ’s Bayou in Roberts, ID for the annual Ghost Show, starting at 8 o’clock on Saturday the 27th. Call 208-228-2331 for more information and reservations.

The big concert this week is at the Colonial Theater in Idaho Falls. Edgar Winter, famous for Free Ride and the legendary instrumental Frankenstein, is performing at 7 p.m. Tickets are $28. Get more information about this very influential artist of the 70’s at www.edgarwinter.com.

From Boulder CO, the bluegrass band Elephant Revival Concept makes their debut performance Saturday night at Portneuf Valley Brewery, starting at 8 p.m. Visit www.myspace.com/elephantrevivalconcept for songs and information on this regional touring act.

Lava Hot Springs will be ‘in the spirit’ Saturday night with a concert from Mirror Image at the Blue Moon Bar, starting at 9 p.m. There will be prizes and giveaways with a costume contest, games and more. No cover charge.

The First National Bar is celebrating Halloween all weekend with an indie rock concert on Saturday and metal on Sunday. Saturday night, the Pocatello native Travis Shipley opens for the northern Idaho-based indie band, Finn Riggins, () starting at 9 o’clock. On Sunday night the 28th, The Reptilians, Salami Rocket and Dr. Seuss is Dead hit the stage at 7 p.m. Cost is $5 at the door for both shows.
