Snow, schmo.
Thanks to all who participated in and supported Idaho State
Kite
> Festival pre-events and events. We made all sorts of kites -
deltas,
> layang layang, yeon, kimono, and minis to name a few. It did
snow,
but on
> the whole it was a great Festival!
>
> The workshops during the past couple weeks and Friday - Sat were
all
well
> attended and executed - Friday about 50 at Marshall Library, the
cute
> little Early Learning Center kids at the kimono kite workshop,
vets
and
> their friends at the VFW workshop. Added to over 100 made at
Portneuf
> Library, another 112 at Twin Falls first annual Fall Children's
Festival,
> a dozen made by the cancer survivor support group, and the
precious
> miniatures designed by Tom Tinney at his workshop, we now have a
big
> variety and many kites in Idaho ready for the next kite fly!
>
> Tom Tinney's minature kite workshops were amazing. He's generous
beyond
> belief, driving from Coeur d'Alene to present a two-hour workshop
without
> charge. In fact, since it was still snowing we kept making kites
for
> nearly twice the time originally scheduled. We assembled 4 kites
and
were
> given spares to make at home as well. His dragonfly is an awesome
> original design, iridescent and opalescent. We still can't
believe
we put
> them together. We also each made two miniature diamond kites with
his
> Idaho State Kite Festival logo, and a pleated kimono kite that is
cleverly
> designed. Of all the kite workshops I've attended, Tom's was the
best
> prepared, organized and presented to make learning the special
skills
> easier. You can learn more about him at www.littlekites.com
>
> Nearly all of us at Tom's workshop ended up at Bartz Field. The
snow had
> just stopped but we each HAD to fly a kite. Tom took one to the
middle of
> the field, wading thru the snow. Monte Anderson from Ogden put up
a
> colorful schoolbus kite while his wife Gerry watched from the car
with her
> veterans' kite. I flew MY red-white-blue kite. JoEtta Abo from
Burley
> had her minis, as did Wendy Luderman from Boise whose husband
Jamie
missed
> the workshops but saw the strange sight of kitefliers in the snow
near the
> sledders, when he arrived at Bartz. Dean Turnblom of Idaho Falls
had
a
> trunkful of kites but received word from his wife at home that
their
tree
> had fallen on their house so he had to head home soon after he
arrived!
> Roy from Burley munched his burger and applauded our efforts.
Chelsea
> Kawakami flew in from Florida to volunteer and take photos and
video
of
> this foundling bunch of founding participants of the first annual
Idaho
> State Kite Festival!
>
> So everything leading up to the flies was a resounding success,
and
the
> fly was more fun than not! We're already making plans for next
year's on
> Oct 2-5!
>
> Sorry if you missed it - good ol' Idaho weather. Thanks to all
our
> sponsors and supporters for everything, and stay tuned for kite
events
> throughout the year.
