IDAHO FALLS — I haven’t laughed hard enough to make my stomach hurt for a long time . . .
I went to the Pablo Francisco show on Friday night at the Civic Auditorium in Idaho Falls not knowing entirely what to expect. Sure, I knew a little bit about him, that he was on MADTV and Mind of Mencia, or that he got his start in Arizona, you know, press release and Wikipedia stuff.
But I tend to think of comedy in quite the same way I think of music —you never know until you hear it.
One thing that everybody who has grown up in this area knows quite well is that Southeast Idaho, for the most part, is a highly conservative area of the U.S. And that is why I am pretty sure that not too many people at that show who grew up here have ever heard —or seen anything like Pablo Francisco’s show. At least in person anyway.
After a brief introduction and a few jokes by a couple of Z103 FM radio DJs, Pablo came out onto the stage to a standing ovation from the crowd, some of whom had been waiting for over an hour to see the comedian.
His stage entrance introduced the crowd to his amazing energy, which lasted throughout the near hour and an half that he was on-stage.
His first skit, and one of my personal favorites of the evening, was on death metal, particularly the deep growl that the singers of the music genre produce. He reproduced what a duet  between a “regular” music singers (including Aaron Neville) and a death metal singer would sound like, going back and forth between the voices as if they were each his own.
There were some technical difficulties at the beginning of the show. The mic seemed to be malfunctioning and Francisco’s voice went from being too loud and distorted to understand to being so quiet that people in the back had a hard time hearing.
But, proving his capability to improvise, Francisco used it in his routine, asking if the sound guy was on Crystal Meth when he set up the show and doing an impersonation of what a sound guy on meth would act like. He even referred the mic as being made by the Mattel toy company.
Eventually a new mic was put in place, however, and Francisco’s sound effects and voice impersonations truly came to life.
During the show he broke out some fan favorites, including the voice of “the movie guy” (You know, the  guy who does the voice of all the movie previews), Tortilla Boy, Arnold Schwarzenegger, The Allstate Insurance guy (”Are you in good hands?”), Keanu Reeves and many others.
Francisco often rotated between skits and voices so fast that the audience didn’t have time to stop laughing.
I will say though that Francisco’s comedic style is not for the easily offended. Let’s just say that the show was for people who were 18 year old and up for a reason. A few people left the show after hearing a few jokes.
But then there were those, including a few guys who were sitting not far from me, who were laughing so hard they were practically falling out of their chairs. Many people even yelled things from their seats, including additions to Francisco’s routine or requests for voice impersonations.
The things that stood out to me the most after seeing the show were Francisco’s versatility and energy. He moved from one routine to another seamlessly, and his celebrity voice impersonations were excellent. He was animated — he didn’t stand in one place for more than a few moments at a time.
If you missed the show, you can see clips of Pablo Francisco performing on YouTube or on his website at www.pablofrancisco.com
