LIFE ON THE ROCK
For those of you who don't know. Samoa was always called the The Rock because on the map it looked like a tiny little rock.
I was born in the Beautiful Island of Samoa, and now reside in beautiful Pocatello ID. Leaving home was hard, but you had to find anything that you loved to do so that you could say I'm going to America. Mostly you'd leave home because you got offered a full scholarship to play football in college, or you just got enlisted to be in the military. For me it was a different story. We grew up playing mostly RUGBY. Which is American Football, but with out pads and its also a whole different game. The first time I played football, I loved it. I was able to attract some colleges when I played High School ball, but my Mom thought it was too far from home. So then moved to Hawai'i to go to college for computers. And now, I'm in Pocatello ID working on computers. I had some family attend ISU and had told me a lot about Pocatello. It sounded like the place for me, and I love the winters, so here I am.
I have to tell you though. Life on the rock is way more different than here. Back home, you would be lucky to live in a house. Families mostly lived in huts with no electricity, and would live off the land. Water was no problem, because you had beautiful waterfalls and rain that would drop almost everyday. To be honest with you, now that I'm here in America. I am happy that I lived the way I lived back home. It taught me a lot. It taught me a lot of cooking as well. On the rock, the men do the cooking. Yes we do, and I still cook today for my family which is, Me, my wife and my little brother.
My little brother is 13, and just moved here last summer. I moved him here to give him the opportunity I never got. Kids back home would die to move out to America for an opportunity to anything but mostly football. Now that he has the chance, he is now taking this opportunity that he was given to the fullest. My brother went to Hawthorne Middle lastyear, and will be new to Pocatello High. He now plays for the freshman football team. He had his first time playing football ever on wednesday, and they lost. He had lots of fun though, and is still learning a lot. He is finding out that Rugby and Football are totally different stories. So far he is loving it out here.
My brother and I will never forget who we are, and where we are from. My best wishes to my little brother.
