Title:  Portneuf Hosts Juvenile Diabetes Camp

(Pocatello, ID) Portneuf Medical Center will be hosting the annual Juvenile Diabetes Summer Camp on Thursday, August 7, 2008 from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm at the FMC Employees Park, 10811 N. Rio Vista Road.

“The event is designed to help children with diabetes learn more about the disease, but more importantly develop a support system with one another,” said Nancy Bickley, R.N. and Certified Diabetes Educator with Portneuf Diabetes Education.

Some of the days events will include:  Jeopardy: Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Olympic Course, Geo-Caching, Guest Lecturer, Water Games,  Making Healthy Snacks and of course fishing!  Families of the children with diabetes will join in at 4:00 pm for dinner and a fun filled evening.

During past camps, the children have made new friends and developed special bonds with each other. They are able to relate with one another and discover they are not alone in dealing with the disease on a daily basis.

Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults.  It is sometimes referred to as “Juvenile Diabetes”.   About 1 in 10 people with diabetes have type 1.  With type 1 diabetes, the body is no longer able to produce insulin on its own.  Insulin is needed in order convert sugar into energy.
