In Pocatello, Two Idaho Army National Guard Units to receive Army Meritorious Unit Citation Saturday, Aug. 2
Two Idaho Army National Guard units based in eastern Idaho will be honored with one of the U.S. Army’s highest commendations this Saturday, Aug. 2 at 11:00 a.m. in Pocatello.
The two units, the First Battalion, 148th Field Artillery (1-148 Field Artillery) with headquarters in Pocatello and the 938th Engineer Detachment from Driggs will each receive the U.S. Army Meritorious Unit Commendation in a ceremony at the Pocatello Soccer Fields, east of the Bannock County Fairgrounds.
The 1-148th Field Artillery distinguished itself as part of the Idaho Army National Guard’s 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team deployment to Iraq in 2004-2005, the largest deployment in the history of the Idaho Army National Guard.  In part, the citation cites the 1-148th’s training and mentorship to over 11,500 Iraqi Security Forces during security operations as part of Iraq’s rebuilding efforts.  The battalion also provided a safe and secure environment for over 28 polling sites in the Sulaymaniyah and Kirkuk provinces of Iraq during the historic national elections of January 2005.
The 938th Engineer Battalion took part in Operation Iraqi Freedom from February 2003 to March 2004.  The unit, which specializes in aircraft and structural firefighting, provided critical firefighting prevention and protection for combat aircraft of the 101st Airborne Division in northern Iraq during its deployment.  Unit members also provided firefighting training to Iraqis as part of the efforts to restore critical infrastructure in that nation.
