Shelley Canalia sits in her little 53-seat theatre and her smile is a little melancholy. ‘The idea behind this theatre is to offer a place where people can see new things. A safe enviroment where children can come and learn acting skills, but also self-confidence and how to work together.’ Theatre In a Barn has been open now for a year and a half and as the owner /artistic director, Canalia has offered two fine locally written productions, ‘Internal Affairs’ and "Harvest” both written by local author Christopher C. Taft. The theatre also has been home to workshops on beginning acting for children and a more advanced class on Shakespeare. ‘Everything we have produced has been successful and I am proud of what we are doing, however with the economy slowing, one of the first economic cuts a family has to make is extracurricular activities for their children.’ Canalia is revamping the class schedule and pricing to make it more affordable to all children. The Children’s acting Studio will offer a series of after school classes everyday Monday through Thursday, one at 3:15 to 4:00 and then from 5:00 to 5:45. There are also classes available to homeschoolers on Tuesday from 10:00 TO 11:00 “We have found that our schedule was not as flexible for many people whose children have different after school activities. So for the parent who would like their child in a theatre class once a week they now have the choice of 4 different days and two different times. The cost of the class is $15.00 a class starting July 28th and this session will end November 7th with a production for the public and family. Our three-week sessions in the summer were fun and intense but during the school year an acting class once a week for 4 months will allow the children to really soak in the fundamentals and not has so much conflict with homework, family and other interests, Canalia explained. Theatre in a Barn will also be presenting the first show of the Fall season, a one act one woman play called “Adrianne” I have long wanted to bring this a piece to the stage. J.T McRedmond, a local writer who passed away, wrote it and it tells the story of a woman who has to deal with the choice of attending her husband's funeral. Opening night will be August 22nd and run the following three weekends. At this point, says Canalia, we are the little engine who could; struggling but still climbing up the hill.
