At the age of 33, Kari Conway has already had a total hysterectomy, 13 surgeries and over 200 medical procedures in her battle to fight three non-curable diseases.
A rock show fundraiser has been planned to offset Conway’s medical expenses. The Four Hell’s SAKE show will take place on Saturday, July 26 at Tony’s Billiards in Blackfoot at 7 p.m. Local bands Neckbrace, Sonic Devastation, Dissolved in Blood and Dimmencha will perform. There will be a $6 cover charge.
SAKE is an acronym for Sound Alliance for Kari’s Expenses. Organizer Shawn Lowry came up with the acronym while writing a blog on myspace. Shawn’s blog reads, “Everyone has heard the phrase ‘for heaven’s sake,” but I could also call the event ‘Four Hell’s SAKE.”
Lowry met Conway several years ago through his myspace blogs.
“She thinks my blogs are the funniest things in the world, that’s one of the reasons I keep writing my blogs,” Lowry said.
Conway has been battling NASH (non-alcoholic steatosis hepatitis), Ulcerative Colitis and Gastric Paresis (paralyzing of the stomach) for about ten years. Although she is from the Southeast Idaho area, she is currently living in Reno, Nevada to be closer to a medical specialist.
Conway, a single mother with two children, began reading Shawn’s blogs as a means to cheer herself up. Shawn learned of her condition and knew he had a way to help. He is friends with many local bands and has done local fundraisers before, including a tsunami victim fundraiser that collected over $4,500.
“I knew the bands that could help out so why not,” Lowry said.
