WILD WEST LIVES ON AT BUTCH CASSIDY DAYS
July 24-26 visitors to Montpelier, Idaho have the chance to re-live the wild Wild West. In 1896 Butch Cassidy and two other men, Bub Meeks and Elzy Lay robbed the Montpelier Bank. Citizens of Montpelier have used this event to re-create a bit of the old west every third weekend in July.
This year’s celebration will be filled with food, activities and entertainment. Festivities start Thursday July 24 at 10 a.m. with the craft fair and the carnival at Wells C. Stock Park. Later that evening in the Allinger Community Theatre inside the National Oregon/California Trail Center there will be a “Quick Draw” performed by Idaho artist Gary Stone and his wife Bev. This is not a traditional quick draw with guns. Gary will sketch on black paper with white chalk the diary entry Bev reads in about a minute and a half.
Friday’s activities include all day carnival and craft fair with the Little Miss Bear Lake Pageant starting at 4 p.m. in the Allinger Community Theatre. Baseball fans will love this evening as an all night baseball tournament will be played at the Allinger Park.
Saturday morning starts off right with a community breakfast beginning at 7 a.m. in the Wells C. Stock Park sponsored by Black Bear Mountain and the Bear Lake Chamber of Commerce. The craft fair and carnival will run throughout the day, with barrel racing and team roping events starting at 3 p.m. at the Bear Lake Fair Grounds. To enhance the day’s festivities a re-enactment of Butch Cassidy robbing the Montpelier Bank will commence at 6:00 p.m. This year’s “shoot out” will be special as Idaho PBS will be filming the re-enactment for a segment in their “Outdoor Idaho” programming. The Rayo Larson family of Montpelier Idaho have been performing this re-enactment for over 14 years. While the re-enactment is not historically correct the gang has one heck of a lot of fun. The day ends with a delicious “Dutch Oven” Dinner at Wells C. Stock Park. The dance will begin at 8 p.m. with fireworks at 10 p.m.
“This weekend will be the most entertainment and fun for your money.” stated Becky Smith President of the Bear Lake Chamber of Commerce. Come and enjoy the beautiful Bear Lake Valley located within one to one and a half hours drive from Idaho, Wyoming and Utah.
