This August, the Sun Valley Summer Symphony will have a permanent home just steps away from the Sun Valley Resort.  The new pavilion is a structure unlike any other in the region. It will be home to Sun Valley’s Summer Symphony and entertainment events year-round. The design and engineering of the pavilion are truly artistic feats.

The Sun Valley Pavilion concept was developed by FLT Design Engineering Studio of New York City, which has designed similar alfresco concert venues including Pier 6 on Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, Washington DC’s Capitol Concerts Pavilion and the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera’s portable concert facility.

The dominant feature of the pavilion is a soaring 70-foot high proscenium arch. The arch was constructed in a Washington shipyard and shipped to Sun Valley in three separate pieces, then welded back together onsite.

The arch is anchored by an immense foundation consisting of 150 truckloads of concrete. The foundation is designed to make the structure extremely resistant to forces of weather and earthquakes.

The roof is horn-shaped and covered with copper shingles. The distinctive shape of the roof and the arch allow the structure to blend seamlessly with the breathtaking beauty of Sun Valley and classic view of Bald Mountain.

Half an acre of tensile white fabric will be stretched from the arch’s apex to a curved promenade at the rear of the audience. More than 1,500 concertgoers will sit comfortably below the translucent fabric which emits a gentle, diffused light, lending comparisons to a lantern-like glow on summer evenings. About 2,000 more can sit and picnic on the grassy area surrounding the pavilion.

Picnickers will be treated to supreme sound quality thanks to components of the LARES-Lexicon system, which creates the sense of the sound emanating from the stage rather than a speaker system.

Exposed wall surfaces will be surfaced with 750 tons of travertine rock being shipped from Italy. Other structures with similar travertine rock include the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Lincoln Center in New York and the Coliseum in Rome.

Nic Goldsmith, FTL’s Senior Principal and Project Director says the pavilion “emerges from the terrain in the form of two stone retaining walls, arising to its apex to create an intimate sense of place, then melding visually with the natural landscape.”

Sun Valley Resort Owner Earl Holding and his family donated the lion’s share of funds to bring this vision to fruition. Several Symphony supporters have also helped to make this project a reality.
