Broken Social Scene
A Toronto-based enterprise, Broken Social Scene was born of a partnership between Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, creating their music in basements and bedrooms. The line-up expands and contracts depending on who is available to join in. The revolving support cast includes Leslie Feist, Emily Haines, James Shaw, John Crossingham and guitarist Andrew Whiteman who performed on last year’s Twilight stage with Apostle of Hustle. With this diverse make up of the group, every live show promises a new dimension and spontaneity to the performance.
The Big Sleep
The Big Sleep is a three-piece band, based in New York, with a big sound, full of heart and percussive drive. Primarily instrumental with occasional lustrous vocals by bass-player Sonia Balchadani, the Village Voice dubbed The Big Sleep as “easily New York’s best unknown.” Danny Barria and his soaring guitar solos and Gabriel Rhodes’ “deep in the pocket” percussion with Balchadani’s quaking bass create their own world on stage, populated by sweeping and electrifying sets. Their impressive stage show has earned them numerous high profile performances with such bands as Secret Machines, Editors, and Wilderness.
The Twilight Concert Series celebrates its twenty-first season in 2008 by celebrating contemporary music of the twenty-first century. This summer, the Twilight Concert Series presents a strong and exciting group of musicians, some of whom defy definition, ranging from rock to country to hip hop to bluegrass and every possible combination of the above. This is a stellar season and the Salt Lake City Arts Council invites everyone to come downtown on Thursday nights in July and August for the Twilight Concert Series experience.
The 2008 Twilight Concert Series opens on July 10 and is presented every Thursday evening through August 28, at the Gallivan Center in downtown Salt Lake City. To complement the music, the Twilight Market offers food and beverages with something for every taste, from pizza to pasta, from vegetarian to barbecue, and from cookies to gelato. The Twilight Market also offers local artists’ work, including such handcrafted items as jewelry, clothing, soaps, and ceramics. The Twilight Market opens at 5:00 p.m.; the concerts begin at 7:00 p.m.
The concerts are free; for best seating, concert-goers should arrive early. Blankets and chairs may not be placed before 1:30 p.m., and someone must remain with the blanket at all times. Only low-backed chairs are permitted. The Gallivan Center does not allow pets or smoking. Concerts will proceed, rain or shine.
Concert-goers can enjoy shopping at the Twilight Market from 5 to 10 p.m., with a wonderful assortment of foods, beverages and locally produced arts and crafts. Barbecue, vegetarian fare, pastas—and everything in between—are available in the Market. Handcrafted items including jewelry, ceramics, and handbags will be available for sale at the Twilight Market.
