The Twilight Concert Series celebrates its twenty-first season in 2008 by celebrating contemporary music of the twenty-first century. This summer, the Twilight Concert Series presents a strong and exciting group of musicians, some of whom defy definition, ranging from rock to country to hip hop to bluegrass and every possible combination of the above. This is a stellar season and the Salt Lake City Arts Council invites everyone to come downtown on Thursday nights in July and August for the Twilight Concert Series experience.
The 2008 Twilight Concert Series opens on July 10 and is presented every Thursday evening through August 28, at the Gallivan Center in downtown Salt Lake City. To complement the music, the Twilight Market offers food and beverages with something for every taste, from pizza to pasta, from vegetarian to barbecue, and from cookies to gelato. The Twilight Market also offers local artists’ work, including such handcrafted items as jewelry, clothing, soaps, and ceramics. The Twilight Market opens at 5:00 p.m.; the concerts begin at 7:00 p.m.
The concerts are free; for best seating, concert-goers should arrive early. Blankets and chairs may not be placed before 1:30 p.m., and someone must remain with the blanket at all times. Only low-backed chairs are permitted. The Gallivan Center does not allow pets or smoking. Concerts will proceed, rain or shine.
Concert-goers can enjoy shopping at the Twilight Market from 5 to 10 p.m., with a wonderful assortment of foods, beverages and locally produced arts and crafts. Barbecue, vegetarian fare, pastas—and everything in between—are available in the Market. Handcrafted items including jewelry, ceramics, and handbags will be available for sale at the Twilight Market.
Nada Surf
Nada Surf is enjoying its second life with its new release, “Lucky.” Described as alt-rock or indie rock, Nada Surf builds its audiences with a lot of touring and grassroots support for their lyric-rich music. Like the songs that singer guitarist Matthew Caws, bassist Daniel Lorca and drummer Ira Elliot crafted for their previous two albums, “Let Go” in 2003, and “The Weight Is A Gift” in 2005, “Lucky” is rich with images of restlessness, longing and the elusiveness of love. The band counterbalances bittersweet lyrics with musical buoyancy and intimate songs develop into anthems.
Tim Fite
Born and raised in rural New Jersey, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist runs the gamut from hip hop to indie rock and alt/country. Deeply steeped in the contrasting traditions of these genres, Tim Fite’s "Gone Ain't Gone" bridges a cultural void, connecting a deep-seated respect for our troubled and sonically rich past with a view toward a harrowing yet hopeful future.
