Westside Players Present a Winning Pair for Summer
By Lynn Leonard, Special to the Journal
Who Am I this Time? plays Fridays and Saturdays, July 11 – August 2, at The Warehouse, 1009 South 2nd., home of Westside Players, Southeast Idaho's premier nonprofit community dinner theater since 1986. It's the perfect summer evening escape--for mature audiences only. This perfect pair of comedies about life in the theatre—and out of it--is guided by a perfect pair of directors: Diana Potter and Philip Shepherd.
First, in Robert Anderson’s “The Shock of Recognition”, set in 1960, Jack, a successful playwright (Joseph Tornabene-Zalas) thinks it’s high time for full frontal nudity on Broadway. His producer Herb (Michael Czerepinski) is horrified by the idea. To prove Jack wrong, Herb first appeals to his very young secretary, Doris (Tara Norman), and then to Richard (Walt Mecham), an obscure actor who’s hanging around the waiting room. They’ll hate the idea, won’t they? The answer is a big surprise.
Second, in “The Actor’s Nightmare,” Christopher Durang gives us George (Michael Czerepinski), an accountant who suddenly finds himself onstage with no idea of how he got there or what he should do or say. The Stage Manager (Misty Trevino) keeps shoving him into performing with legendary actors Sarah Siddons (Jamie Romine), Ellen Terry (Tara Norman), and Henry Irving (Joseph Tornabene-Zalas) in a dizzying mix of famous roles none of which is right for George. The more nightmarish things get for the actors, the funnier they are for the audience; even the stage crew adds to the laughter.
Everyone involved-- from actors to technical crew-- is a talented volunteer with the perfect community spirit. The real Stage Manager Lisa Hammond keeps everything running smoothly. Costumes and make up are by Jackie Czerepinski. Lighting Design is by Brin Durham assisted by Board Operator Mikel Pierce Mecham. The Lobby Gallery features the dramatic photography of Jessica Thon-Ralph, and Susan Lorenz again hosts our theatrical opening night champagne-appetizer reception at 6pm.
Westside welcomes a new caterer, Pasta & Vino. On the buffet menu: Sirloin Tips in Portobello Demi-Glaze; Three Cheese Manicotti; Red Potatoes with Parsley and Butter; Fruit Salad; House Salad; Bread; and for dessert, Milk Chocolate Brownies and Peach Cobbler.
Dinner & show tickets are $28.00 per person, tax included. Show only tickets are $15 a piece. On opening weekend, July 11 & 12, ISU students with a valid ID pay $5.00 for show-only admission. For information and reservations, please call The Raven's Nest at 232-2232.
