POCATELLO — Holden Young can describe the music of the Holden Young Trio in one word: funky.
The sound of the Holden Young Trio, or HY3, may bring to mind the sounds of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blind Melon, or Sublime.
“It’s like some sort of hybrid of rock, blues, funk, and then some more experimental music too. But it ends up sounding something like Blind Melon or the Red Hot Chili Peppers,” said singer/songwriter and guitarist Holden Young in a recent interview with the Journal.
Young says he is a fan of all kinds of music and lists just a few of his favorite artists as Paul Simon, Johnny Cash and Jimi Hendrix. Other influences include Bob Marley, the Grateful Dead and Eric Clapton.
He is not just a of fan or music, he has studied it as well. Originally from Maine, Young studied music in Boston for several years before moving to Nashville.
“I put together a couple of bands down there and that’s how that got started, and that was about four years ago,” Holden said.
Eventually, Young ended up in Colorado where he has resided ever since.
“I felt more at home with the music scene here (in Colorado). This area has been really responsive to the music we do,” Holden said.
Young is also the songwriter for the group. His influences for the lyrics come from a variety of places.
“For a long time through hardship, then I kind of progressed into a ... bit of knowledge in love. Then I went back to hardship after that and then since I’ve had the chance to play a lot over the last two, three years, I try to just diversify as much as possible and write about more specific things and try to write about different things that I really don’t know a lot about just to learn about them,” Young said.
For this tour, musicians Jeff Tistana will play the bass guitar and Zack Scott on drums.
“I have one of these bands with people who have other projects going but we’re all professional musicians and happen to be available for this tour,” Young said, “We’ve been rehearsing for the last three months in and amongst other shows specifically for this tour.”
HY3 will be making a stop in Pocatello on Thursday and Friday as part of their 2008 tour. Although the main show will be on Friday, the guys will perform a short set after open mike time on Thursday as well. The show will begin at 9 p.m. and will cost $4.
Young says the group’s show is upbeat. While they do play a few cover songs, their set list consists of mostly original music.
“Because it’s a trio we take a lot of time to feature each musician,” Young said. He also said that dancing at the show is encouraged.
Young said that the trio plans to hang out with the fans after the show.
“That’s the best part when you’re on the road, just meeting people.”

Jenny - I am familiar with the great music of the Holden Young Trio. In your write-up you mentioned Holden studied music in Boston for several years. What you failed to mention is that Holden graduated summa bile laude from Berklee College of Music where the likes of Kevin Eubanks, Adam Topol-Jack Johnson's drummer, and John Mayer also attended. Although informative, your article does NOT tell where HY3 is playing in Pocatello. Please advise. Thanks so much.
