“Listeners may come to know him as a leading musical stylist during this time of unprecedented cultural heterogeneity.” - Dave Caddell
One of the few good things that came as a result of Hurricane Katrina is HY3. Holden Young, while living in Nashville recording his first album, took the first chance he could to do relief work in the devastated southern coast. After 3 months of hard labor, living in a tent and eating Red Cross and military supplies, his dissatisfaction with the priorities of America grew and he retreated to the mountains of Colorado to regain his peace with the world.
Billy Franklin, while on tour with New Orleans originals Atman Roots at the time of the hurricane, ended up in the same small mountain town as Holden. A New Orleans native, bassist Franklin faced the same dissolution as Young and found partnership in the positive and soul-searching nature of their music. At the same time drummer Eric Rolls had been creating for himself a life as a snowboard coach and professional competitor. His passion for music always the fuel for his life as an extreme athlete, Rolls jumped at the chance to put this incredible energy into touring and recording with the talented musicianship of Franklin & Young.
The sound of HY3 is simple: funky. They have a rhythmic connection that appeals to listeners and dancers alike. With rock-steady grooves, intricate bass-lines and hard-hitting guitar HY3 is “accessible to anyone who enjoys music.”
