Southeastern District Health Department to Offer Free Workshop
Tobacco Cessation Program to Hold Free Class
Pocatello – Most people want to quit tobacco but just don’t know how. Nancy Caspersen, RN, will teach you how to quit. Classes will begin on Monday, November 30th and continue through Thursday, December 3rd, 2009. Time options are from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. During these four consecutive days/evenings, Nancy will provide participants with the information needed to succeed in tobacco cessation using coping skills that are healthier than lighting up or reaching for a chew.
Southeastern District Health Department (SDHD) will be offering this tobacco cessation course to anyone interested in attending. Southeastern District Health Department to Celebrate World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1st. The World Health Organization established World AIDS Day in 1988 to provide governments, national AIDS programs, faith organizations, community organizations, and individuals with an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic. The theme for World AIDS Day 2009 is 'Universal Access and Human Rights'.
Valuable progress has been made in increasing access to HIV/AIDS services, yet greater commitment is needed around the world if the goal of universal access is to be achieved.

Annual ISU Graduate Art Exhibition Opens Nov. 16, Runs through Dec. 11 at Davis Gallery POCATELLO – The last exhibition of 2009 in the Idaho State University John B. Davis Gallery is the Annual Graduate Student Art Exhibition titled “Intersect.” The opening reception is Monday, Nov.16, from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition dates are from Nov. 17 to Dec. 11. The Smokeless Drinkless Regional Singles Group, based out of Pocatello, had a fun filled evening of singing and dancing to a live band on Tues. Aug. 11. A special thanks goes out to the band "The Ramblers" and Becky Moore, former Century High School Choir Director who led the group in singing campfire songs! In all about 100 people were in attendance. The evening began with a potluck and was held at a local park. The Smokeless Drinkless Regional Singles Group is non-denominational and welcomes singles of all ages with or without children. All activities are non-smoking and non-drinking. The Blackfoot Performing Arts Center will be hosting a Fourth of July Celebration Concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Blackfoot Performing Art Center, 870 S. Fisher St. A community band, men’s chours and other area muscians will be presenting the concert free to the community. Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter has announced the community of Franklin will be Idaho’s “Capital for a Day” June 25. The public can meet with the governor, selected members of his cabinet and other senior state officials from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the LDS Church in Franklin, 106 E. Main St. Franklin’s Mayor Wayne Priestley and other state and local leaders will have lunch with the governor at the same location.
The 42nd annual Bing Hong pancake breakfast will be June 27 and 28 from 8 a.m. to noon both days at Tydeman Park, Eighth Avenue and Young Street, Pocatello, across from the Reel Theater. Tickets are $5 per person or $15 per family. Proceeds help support youth programs in the community, and the goal is to get $10,000 for children’s programs in Pocatello and Chubbuck. Southeast District Health Department announces the Smoke Free 83 Race Team will be in Pocatello June 26 and 27. June 26 from 7 to 9 p.m., and June 27 from 9 to 11 a.m., Tyler Bailey of the Smoke Free 83 Race Team will have his race car on display at Courtesy Ford, 1600 Yellowstone Ave., Pocatello. Bailey will appear at the Pocatello Speedway June 27 for the appearance of the Late Model Lites. This is the first season Bailey is driving the Smoke Free 83 Late Model Lite car, sponsored by Project Filter of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. He is in town to talk to people about quitting smoking.
The Pocatello Amateur Radio Club will hold its annual Field Day event June 27 and 28 at Stuart Park in Chubbuck. This is an opportunity for people to have hands-on experience operating a HAM amateur radio. Licensed people will be available to help the public learn about amateur radio. The event starts at noon Saturday and ends between 10 a.m. and noon Sunday. Stations will be set up for a variety of modes. The event is free to all.
The Semi-truck with 100 fantastic 3-D targets will be arriving from the Rinehart factory, in WI on Tue the 23, or Wed the 24. It will contain an 18 ft giraffe, a 15 ft alien, and many more targets for archers from all over the Intermountain West to shoot in a 2 day event. Only 19 cities in the US are honored to host this shoot per year, and Pocatello has again been chosen as one of those cities. Come on up and enjoy a great weekend.
Legacy Hospital Partners and the Portneuf Health Care Foundation invite the public to a groundbreaking ceremony June 24 at 5:30 p.m. of the Portneuf Medical Center’s new facility on the east bench. There will be an address from Lt. Gov. Brad Little, proclamations from the cities of Pocatello and Chubbuck and a Native American ground blessing. This is the largest construction project in Bannock County history and when completed, the new facility will feature 187 beds, 297,500 new square feet and all private rooms. It also has “green” features.

Blackfoot Relay for Life will be June 19 and 20, starting at noon at the Blackfoot High School football field. The campsite will be set up and registration will be from 4 to 6 p.m. June 19. At 6 p.m. there will be a welcome to the participants, the mayor’s address and opening ceremony. The silent auction will be from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m., and the dinner from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Performers for the Relay include Starvin’ Artists, Sam and Friends and others. The luminaria ceremony will be at 10 a.m., and the pie-eating contest will be at 11:45 p.m. The closing ceremony wraps up the event June 20 from 6:30 to 7 a.m.
Convergys car wash and hot dog roast benefiting Relay for Life will be June 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and July 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Convergys, 805 N. Main St., Pocatello. Donations are $5 minimum for cars and $10 for trucks/SUVs. Hot dogs will be sold for $1. There will also be raffles. On July 2 special vehicle upgrades will be offered for a small sum. Go Fish Speed Dating will be June 25 at 7 p.m. at Portneuf Valley Brewing, 615 S. First Ave., Pocatello, with part of the proceeds to help Family Services Alliance.
