Idaho Home Health and Hospice and Friends of Hospice, in cooperation with the Southeastern District Health Department, will host its annual Hospice Memorial Garden Service May 20 at the SDHD office, 1901 Alvin Ricken Drive, Pocatello. The community is invited to attend and bring an assortment of annual flowers such as marigolds, petunias, pansies and such to put in flowerbeds starting at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served after the planting. The Greater Pocatello Chamber of Commerce will host the 13th annual Sand Trap Golf Tournament May 22 at the Highland Golf Course, with the POW*MIA Awareness Rally Corp., presenting their colors at 8:45 a.m. that day. Format is a five-person scramble and there will be betting and beer holes, a poker run and you can buy mulligans. Kelly Martinez of GAP West Broadcasting will provide music and a remote as well as play 18 holes. Golfing is not a requirement to take part in the tournament. The Pocatello office of the Bureau of Land Management will have two prescribed burns in the Soda Hills area west of Soda Springs and Moonlight area east of Pocatello May 23 through June 1. Purpose is to improve quaking aspen and promote mountain shrub regeneration along with improving elk habitat. Veterans and troops will be honored May 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Citizens Community Bank at 900 S. Utah, Idaho Falls, and Ammon, 2797 S. 25th. There will be free food and fun. Raffle tickets are available for prizes donated by local merchants. The National Guard will be on hand to cook and there will be a chance to Sponsor a Flag for a family veteran. The Bureau of Reclamation, with the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes and Bureau of Indian Affairs will have a rededication ceremony May 27 at 1:30 p.m. at the Fort Hall Bottoms in Fort Hall. The site is located on tribal and Reclamation land near the American Falls Reservoir and the 5-foot sandstone monument is in the boundaries of the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. Field of Heroes will be May 22, 23, 24 and 25 at the Century High School soccer field in Pocatello. The tribute honors men and women who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. The public is invited to all the programs. The schedule is: May 22, 10 a.m., opening ceremony, speaker Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter, 6 p.m., youth program, 7 p.m. flag folding ceremony; May 23, 7 p.m., flag folding ceremony; May 24, 6 p.m., Market Band featuring Sarah Hibbert Concert, 7 p.m., flag folding ceremony; May 25, 6 p.m., sunset ceremony, parade of honor and 7 p.m., flag folding ceremony.
“Frost/Nixon” will play at Idaho State University’s Bengal Theater May 20 and 21 at 5:30 and 8 p.m., as part of ISU Alternative Cinema Circle’s Summer Film Series. Admission is free. “Frost/Nixon” was nominated for five Academy Awards, including best picture, actor and director. It follows journalist David Frost’s efforts to gain an exclusive interview with former President Richard Nixon following Watergate. Dance Vibrations Spring Recital will be May 16 at Century High School auditorium, Pocatello. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show will be at 7 p.m. The show will feature competition team and non-competitive routines. Dancers range in age from 2 to adult. Admission is free. Sah-Wah-Be Native Plant Society will meet for a field trip May 18. Join the group at 5:45 p.m. for an evening trip to University Pond on the east side of Interstate 15 north of the Lava Hot Springs Exit 47. Dr. Karl Holte, ISU emeritus professor of botany, will share his knowledge of plants in the area. Pocatello Model Railroad and Historical Society will have an open house May 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the UPRR brick building 59, located north of the Benton Street overpass at the south end of the UP employee parking lot. To get there, take West Bonneville to the depot, turn right or south and drive through the lot. There will be lots of trains running in N, HO, S and O and G gauges and there’s more in the museum area. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
Franklin Middle School, 2271 E. Terry St., Pocatello, will host its fifth annual Tri-School chess tournament May 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school. About 70 students from School District 25’s middle schools will participate. The public is welcome.
Spring recital with Brindusa-Moore Ballet Academy will be May 16 at Frazier Hall, Idaho State University. Times will be 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets cost $3.

Portneuf Gap Project, a charitable organization raising funds to help people caught in the financial gap because of inadequate medical insurance and cost of major medical issues will have an evening of arts and entertainment June 5 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Warehouse, 1009 S. Second Ave., Pocatello. Local artists will display their artwork and local musicians will perform. There will be several items raffled off. Marsh Valley Future Farmers of America and Bannock County Farm Bureau will invite fourth-graders in the area to an open house at Marsh Valley High School ag class on May 13 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The FFA will demonstrate welding and animal skills, and the Bannock County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee will offer tips on four-wheeler safety and a demonstration on wheat. The fourth-graders will each receive a small loaf of bread. About 150 students are expected to take part.
Idaho Fish and Game Commission will meet May 13 and 14 at 7 p.m. in the Wood River Room, Pond Student Union, Idaho State University. This is the commission’s quarterly meeting and will include a public hearing to discuss proposed chinook salmon seasons on May 13. There may be a decision on the pelican management plan and proposal for eliminating all sandhill crane controlled hunts to a limited general hunt. The meeting will continue May 14 at 8 a.m. in the Wood River Room.

School board of District 25 will meet May 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Education Service Center, 3115 Pole Line Road, Pocatello. Purpose is to the 2009-10 budget, executive session on personnel issues, reduction in force, possibly reduce compensation for temporary work and introduce revised pay manual for the board to consider May 19. American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Boys and Girls State delegates will be distributing the poppies honoring the war dead at local businesses May 9. In 1921 the American Legion Auxiliary adopted the poppy as the national memorial flower. They realized that the distribution of the poppy would be an excellent way to raise money needed for rehabilitation work. The money raised from donations for the poppies help support our local Veterans Home and homeless veterans. This is the 85th year of this commemoration. The community support of Poppy Days would be appreciated again this year.
A candidate forum for the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes general election will be May 12 at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria at Sho-Ban High School. The election is scheduled for May 29. There will be a moderator and refreshments will be served. Seventeen candidates have filed for the election.
Bannock Humane Society adoption day will be May 9 from noon to 4 p.m. at 850 Barton Road, Pocatello. Cat adoptions are $45, kittens, $65, dog and puppies, $85, and small dogs are available.
