Pastorgate: Enough Already
Unfortunately, I am going to disagree with those who continue to condemn Obama for his choice in church attendance. This is a non-issue. This debate has no significance in the broader question of who should be the next President. Overall, I do not think the mission or message of Obama's church is divisive, radical, or un-Christian. And given that the last time I checked, freedom of religion is guaranteed in this country, what church Obama chooses to attend is entirely beside the point: the qualifications for an American president do not include adherence to mainstream Christian orthodoxy. If Obama were a devout Buddhist, Hindu, Jew, or Muslim -- he would be no less qualified as a candidate for political office. (Not that Americans are ready to acknowledge that, but hey.) So Obama attends a historically black church with an emphasis on issues specific to the black community: so what? As a young man in his 20s, trying to find his place in life, that was where he found a home. Who cares? If American political discussion has devolved to the point that where you go to church is more important than policy proposals, God help us all. I'm sure the Founding Fathers are rolling in their graves. With 4000 lives lost in the war in Iraq, the economy slipping into recession, rising national debt, bin Laden still at large.... Are we SERIOUSLY going to boil down the debate on Obama's qualifications as a candidate to the question of whether or not he might be too pro-black or whether or not we would attend the same church? As long as the media can keep us distracted from issues that actually affect our lives & livelihood... we have no one but ourselves to blame. Elena 2 comments from 2 users
