Yellowstone
Every year my wife and I try to spend 3-4 days enjoying Yellowstone park. For several years we invited our daughters and their families to go with us. One year we actually had the campground host threaten to fine us because of the noise in our campsite area after 8:00 pm. It didn't help that the grand kids were chasing squirrels, fell into other campsite fire pits and everyone in the campsites around us including me, were hit in the head at least once by Frisbees that the kids and their parents were throwing. It got to the point where we didn't go anywhere in the Madison camp ground with out keeping an eye peeled for incoming. This year we decided to go by ourselves and not mention to the kids that we were going to spend the Labor Day weekend in the park. At least that is what I remember deciding. A couple of days ago the two older sons of one daughter informed me that they were going with us to the park.  "How did you know we were going", I asked? "Grandma told us and invited everyone", they replied. When I asked my wife what was going on, she said that she couldn't stand to go to the park without inviting everyone who wanted to go and that the oldest son of the other daughter was going also. That means that my expedition quality 4-person geodesic dome tent will be sleeping at least four people, maybe five. Anyone who is familiar with 4-man tents knows they only sleep three people and any more have to sleep in the vestibule area. If anyone has to get up in the night for a potty break, they will trip and fall over everyone else and maybe worse before they get out of the tent and head for the lavatory. I'm sure We will enjoy the park immensely this fall, but I'm also going to watch for incoming

Haven't  been there yet.

Gotta go.

What suggestions would you make for us; since we will be making the trip with a two and a four year old?

If you are camping in the park, make your reservations for your camp site early. I don't think a 2 and four year old will be as noisy as my grand kids are, so, that probably won't be a serious problem. They do enforce a noise rule after 8:00pm where all generators have to be turned off and people are required to be quiet. There are also hotels and cabins at Old Faithful, Lake, Canyon, and Mammoth. West Yellowstone also has great accomodations such as the Stage Coach Inn. If you haven't been there yet you need to see Old Faithful geyser,The Norris Basin, Lake Yellowstone, Mammoth, Tower Falls, Hayden Valley and the Lamar Valley. Other than that, there are great hikes all over the park you can go on. I'd get one of the books you can get at the stores that describe the various hikes in Yellowstone. We like Trout Lake, Pelican Creek and the walk along the river at Madison Junction if you are after easy hikes you can take the kids on. Most of the hikes in the park have great scenery, some are as long as 10-12 hours or even overnight. If you want to see grizzlies, your best bet is probably to be in the Lamar Valley just as it is getting light, but there are no guarantees that you will see one.

We spent the weekend in Yellowstone a couple of weeks ago, and we stayed in Madison too. (And Fishing Bridge) - We had a small 5th wheel full of kids, and my dh and I plan on going back in a couple of weeks for the fall activities...primarily the elk bugling!  No kids!  Have a good time, and be sure to hit the East side of the lower loop for the immense buffalo herd...they are in the rut right now and are quite vocal!!

Thanks for the tip. I'm very aware of the buffalo herd on the East Lower Loop. If I had been thinking, I would have realized what time of year it was and would have planned on heading over there. However, I wasn't thinking and needed someone to remind me. I think we would have gone over there anyway, because my wife loves to walk the Pelican Creek trail and I like to spend time glassing Hayden Valley.
