Conductor of Idaho State Civic Symphony
A recent letter to the editor in the ISJ regarding the selection of a new conductor of the symphony emphasized availability and saving money. Such an emphasis is short sighted and will yield poor results, in my judgement.? I have discussed symphony issues with board members and they believe that regionalization of the sympony is not an option. My suggestion is that the criteria for selection of a new conductor include criteria such as someone with a vision toward excellence, an interest in development, a desire to regionalize the orchestra, and a desire to professionalize some positions. It has been suggested that Dr. Brooks be named the new conductor. If he meets the high standard I put forth, I have no problem with that. I would also like to see a discussion of the reasons that Pocatello puts so much emphasis on Holt Arena, the Dodge Rodeo etc but so little on the cultural side of our city. Why can't we have a wonderful regional symphony? The only reason I can think of is that we are mired in thinking rooted in the past.

The ISJ has generally ignored the choice of a new conductor for the symphony.   It seems to me that the symphony board members lack the vision to lead the symphony in a new direction aimed at excellence.  I have discussed some of the issues with board members and see little evidence of a grand plan for the future of the symphony.

A recent letter to the ISJ suggested Dr. Brooks as the new conductor for reasons that included availability and low cost.   I am not suggesting that Dr. Brooks be eliminated from consideration.

What I am suggesting is that the criteria for a new conductor include:  someone with a vision for excellence in the symphony:  someone who can raise sufficient funds to create such an orchestra: someone who has an interest in regionalizing the orchestra: someone who will go into the community and sell the orchestra and music: and, finally, someone who will professionalize parts of the orchestra.

It seems strange the Pocatellans can get so worked up about Holt Arena,  the Dodge Rodeo,  sports events, etc etc but pay so little attention to the cultural needs of the city.  Sure, rodeo and other events  raise dollars for the city and that is important.   But I think, in the long run, a vibrant cultural base also will pay big dividends for the city.
