A look back (and forward) at the logic of the JHub and Praise for Kate Carpenter
The new year is a great time to revisit previous discussions, such as this one from November:

POSTS

Like many People, I read from several different news sources each day. I also have regular contact with several friends that I used to work with in order to make sure I know how they are doing and to stay up to speed in a couple of areas where I have a particular interest. I guess I have an inquiring mind and just feel a need to know as much as I can.

When I pull up the J-Hub, I do so to read what is on the minds of the people in this area. If someone wants to include an article they have read as well as their views on the subject, then that is what is on their mind and I am interested in what they think.

I don’t wish to be negative or offend anyone, but posting an article straight from a news source to the J-Hub without any commentary or opinions from the one submitting the article doesn’t make sense to me. We can get the information from reading the newspaper ourselves. A good number of us have probably read about the subject in at least two of the news sources we read every day.

This really isn’t a rant because I don’t have to read anything that doesn’t interest me. However, if there is a very good reason for posting articles from readily available news sources with out any further commentary, I would like to understand the reason and maybe become a little smarter than I currently am.

No ranting necessary - I agree with you.  A BLOG is something that you write...not a copy and paste from ah AP source.  At least, without some commentary about WHY ONE is posting it.  I believe the "articles" is the place for those!!  ;)

On December 30, 2007 in the Sunday print edition of the JHub, Kate Carpenter made it clear that:

The Idaho State Journal includes news, features, sports, and opinion from all over the world. Arent such topics "what is on the minds of people in this area," as mbogo mentions he pulls up the jhub to attain?

"A BLOG is something that you write ... not a copy and paste from an AP source," writes marci4tony.

Doesn't the Idaho State Journal utilize the AP as a source? Doesn't managing editor Ian Fennell regularly post other people's writing on the Politics, Community, and other blogs, in order to stimulate discussion? Ian usually puts local writers up there, but their topics and positions are diverse and global.

Doesn't it make sense to have the opportunity in our JHub community to comment on any article in the Journal -- reprinted from AP  -- or from any news source, for that matter?

It doesn't seem like this blog needs to be so limited.

Apparently, from her annoucement, our tech whiz Kate Carpenter agrees with me.

Finally, am I the only one who think Kate looks pretty dang cute in that bunny, sheep, or whatever it is ... outfit?

Please share your thoughts.

At the end of August, in Blackfoot. I look forward to seeing you there.

I'm interested in moving onward, and into, one of those sheep outfits, Kate.

When and where is the state fair this fall?

OK, all, I've got to step in here for a second - there have been some good points made on both sides about the merits of reposting from other sources and about writing original content.
Let's move on from here and remember to respect what everyone on the site has to say. If you're not interested in a post, don't read it. If you'd like to hear what the author has to say on a subject, ask.

My thoughts are in line with kerrberr2. As she mentions, there are some people out there who don't read from other sources. In my experience, these people who don't read news much include many university students in Idaho, New Jersey and other states, who I have taught. In my 15+ years of doing staff development in K-12 schools, I also have met many practicing classroom teachers who don't read much.

Scary, but true.

The fact is: most people receive their information from television, and reading in a secondary pursuit.

But TV now has competition. Scores of these same people flock to sites such as the JHub, MySpace, Facebook, and the like.

So what is wrong with utilizing an awesome resource such as the JHub to share, for example, a press release or story about a great student, professor, community event , or any other topic of importance? I don't see what the big deal is about someone choosing to share something on the blog that they thought was inspiring or interesting .. and was simply found elswehere.

On November 15, marci4tony said "A BLOG is something that you write...not a copy and paste ... "

But in her November 15 entry, she shared this with us:

...something GOOD to talk about...

THE ROAD TO SUCCESS IS NOT STRAIGHT -
There is a curve called FAILURE;
A loop called CONFUSION;
Speed bumps called FRIENDS;
Red lights called ENEMIES;
Caution lights called FAMILY.
You will have flats called JOBS -
But if you have a spare called DETERMINATION;
And an engine called PERSERVERANCE;
Insurance called FAITH and a
Driver called JESUS -
YOU WILL MAKE IT TO A PLACE CALLED SUCCESS!!

That poem has been in mass emails and on the internet for years. You can cut and paste a few lines from it, put them into a google search, and you will see its origins. On her blog, she also shares a Christmas poem with us on December 7 -- from another source -- as well as at least a few other other such mass email thoughts. marci4tony added a sentence or two of her thoughts with these posts. But if she didn't, so what? Frankly, I like these ideas and poems and I hope she keeps sharing them. Why would it matter if they  were simply posted from other sources to share with others? This is an open forum.

Sometimes I cut and paste an email I have received because it means so much to me.  I think it is great when people comment on their post, but sometimes it is also nice when someone just posts something interesting to share.  I mean I probably wouldn't read it normally.  Besides there are some people out there that don't read from other sources so it is a way to get that info out to others.  I say as long as you post that is all that matters to me.

that one's easy: go to the state fair in the fall, and put your head in the hole they cut in the wooden sheep painting. then smile for the camera!

Your point is well taken Kate.

But I have one more pressing question:

Where can I acquire such a sheep outfit?

Michael -
I love your contributions to TheJHub.com (and not just because you like my sheep photo). And, having read a lot of blogs in my short time, I know it's not uncommon for bloggers to copy and paste from news sources to let other readers know what they're talking about, so I agree with you there. But keep in mind that an article in itself isn't why someone reads your blog - it's the opinions that you have to offer about the issue in the article. That's why my favorite posts of yours are ones where you quote an article and then offer your own viewpoint. That's a great way to get a conversation going.
