Romney to Give Speech About his Mormon Religion
I knew this was coming. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney will deliver a much-anticipated speech on religious faith at the George H. W. Bush library on Thursday. While Romney's Mormon faith has been an underlying theme of his presidential candidacy, it has been an area he and his campaign have shied away from addressing directly. Romney has everything to gain by making the speech. His religion is already a hot topic. He will have to address it eventually, so sooner is better, so that he does not allow his opponents to entirely frame the dialogue. There will be fallout, be he can take part of the dialogue out of other hands by clarifying his misunderstood faith position and addressing concerns. Experts have warned him not to do this. But what other choice does he have? The questions are out there. Silence looks like ducking the issue -- not a very presidential way of doing things. I am sure that what he believes, while it may lead to some adversity, will be able to stand up to scrutiny. Mitt needs to grab this ball and run forward. -- Michael

Years ago John Kennedy had to address basically THE VERY SAME ISSUES concerning his faith. Those who were around "back then" remeber not only his statements but the facts that were floating just behind the scenes - the idea that if he were elected as the President of the United States of America that our great nation would be under the control of Rome and the Pope. Much of this type of conversation was triggered by "editorials" in the media. The same issues are today being raised by both media and even opposing side within and outside the Republican and the Democratic Parties. The same things have been said about both Jewish and Moslum canidates. No matter who you support as the next President of the USA it is important to remember that ALL ISSUES discussed are not always true, nor are they of value. The media has changed so much since that address long ago but the example of the old saying: "The more things change the more they stay the same" is still alive and well in 2007. There is another saying that I love - figures don't lie BUT liers do figure! Hope eveyone will plan to vote. Remember - IF YOU DON'T VOTE YOU HAVE LOST THE RIGHT TO COMPLAIN FOR FOUR YEARS! Happy Holidays to all! Maxine posted by

I was pleased that he handled it the way he did. I think that trying to explain what his faith believes and why, in the political arena would set a bad precedent for politicians for years to come. He simply focused on the values that we all share. I think he made it clear that he doesn't take his political marching orders from the church and that the church leaders don't consult him as they conduct their affairs. If people want to know what the Church of Jesus Christ believes and teaches, they can contact the missionarys, or any LDS friends they may have and someone will be happy to visit with them. If they simply want to know if Mormons are Christians or not, they should read Jeffery Holland's talk at the October General Conference of the church, entittled, "The Only True God and Jesus Christ Whom He Hath Sent", on page 40 of the Ensign. Im sure any member of the church would let someone borrow the Ensign long enough to read the article. You probably can access it on the church website also.
