Wishing everyone a SAFE 4th of July! 10 Forth of July Health Hazards from Quality Health August 07 September 07 October 07 November 07 December 07 January 08 February 08 March 08 April 08 May 08 June 08 July 08 August 08 During this summer we have had to opportunity to enjoy almost every night that Revive @ 5 was held. It has been the greatest fun -fantastic music with lots of dancing, good food and tons of people to meet or get to know better. It has been an amazing group - - ISU attendees, jr and senior high schoolers, some young, some old, some in the middle and quite a few children with great manners and friendly smiles. I am sure I have the best job in the world! It has been wonderful to spend Wednesday night painting hands, faces, legs and arms. We have a great future generation growing up in the Pocatello/Chubbuck area. They are fun, creative, smart and funny, too. The event is held in the Old Town Pocatello Pevillion - it is amazing! Besides the food, music and door prizes the Farmer Market has shared the space with Revive @ 5 - what a great set-up! The street is closed off so you and enjoy the music while shopping for produce or hand crafted items! It was not good news that this was the last of the 2007 Revive @ 5 events. However, there is the good newsthat the Civitans (who did an amazing job this year) are already planning for next year! We will be there and I sure hope many of you will be too! Among the things that Civitan did for the community was to help buy 250 backpacks and fill them with needed school supplies for students in need. WOW! What a huge undertaking!

After reading about the wonderful strides being made in Blackfoot between both the hospital and the local governing bodies I have an idea. Why don't we ask them to run our hospital or set our up like theirs? That was a nice looking check that they presented to the county this week.
I DO NOT THINK A BIG CHECK is necessary - just a nice comfortable amount. So, how do we accomplish this? I do not even want to get into the discussion of our wasteful and often times careless habit of throwing tons of cash to OUTSIDE FOLKS for advice, to mediate and to NOT SOLVE ANYTHING. Just call me grumpy - think it has to do with celebrating my 64th Birthday last Wednesday at Revive @ 5 - love, love, love that event! I feel we have many very qualified people right here in Pocatello and Bannock County who could run a GOOD SURVEY and at a much more reasonable cost and with FASTER AND BETTER results. We live in such a great place! Maxine Baird

One of the most best Revive @ 5 of the year. No one gets more folk to the dance floor than Rocky! Big kids, little kids, older couples, middle age folks and senior citizens. I love, love, love it when eveyone breaks into song or clapping and whistling. Thanks Civitan for all the work you do to make this event work and for all of the worthwhile projects you fund with these events. I think that the Old Town Pavillion has been the best use of funds for this community in the last 10 to 20 years! PLEASE - don't let the season go by with out coming out and sharing the excitement!

Fourth of July is a time for picnics, parades, and of course, patriotism. But for many Americans, the holiday ends very differently than it begins—with a terrifying trip to the emergency room. In addition to common culprits like fireworks and grilling, Independence Day injuries often arise from seemingly safe sources, such as foods, drinks, and fun in the sun. Read on as we reveal the top 10 4th of July health hazards.
Idaho Power seeks OK to increase customer's electric bills again - just saw this and decided to pass it on. Seem this newest request is for the same thing as the last on! What do you think???? This will make a total of 17.6% in 2008. In May I posted on this issue - here is what I said then:
The average family will see their power bill go up by $6.80 a month. How are you handling the constant raises in utility costs? Maxine B

By KBCI Web StaffBOISE - Idaho Power today filed an application with the Idaho Public Utilities Commission to increase the company's base rates for electricity an average of 9.9 percent for its Idaho customers, the company announced Friday.
Although the requested increase is for an average of 9.9 percent, the company's rate proposal impacts various customer groups differently, officials say. For example, if the request is approved as filed, residential customers would see an average increase of 6.3 percent. The monthly bill for a typical residential customer using 1,050 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month would increase from $66.06 to $69.83 during non-summer months and from $70.21 to $74.86 per month during June, July and August. "Two forces are driving this increase; growth in the number of customers and a growing demand for electricity," said Ric Gale, Idaho Power vice president for regulatory affairs. "We have invested heavily to ensure we can provide a safe and dependable supply of energy for our current and future customers. This request seeks to recover those investments." Although Idaho Power is seeking an average increase of 9.9 percent to its base rates, the rates and overall percentage increases differ among customer groups because the costs of serving different customer groups vary. Costs vary due to differences in the way customer groups receive and use electricity. Idaho Power's specific rate proposals for customer groups seek to align more closely customers' rates with the costs of providing them electrical service.
IRS Increases Mileage Rates through Dec. 31, 2008 WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced an increase in the optional standard mileage rates for the final six months of 2008. Taxpayers may use the optional standard rates to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes. The rate will increase to 58.5 cents a mile for all business miles driven from July 1, 2008, through Dec. 31, 2008. This is an increase of eight (8) cents from the 50.5 cent rate in effect for the first six months of 2008, as set forth in Rev. Proc. 2007-70. In recognition of recent gasoline price increases, the IRS made this special adjustment for the final months of 2008. The IRS normally updates the mileage rates once a year in the fall for the next calendar year. "Rising gas prices are having a major impact on individual Americans. Given the increase in prices, the IRS is adjusting the standard mileage rates to better reflect the real cost of operating an automobile," said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. "We want the reimbursement rate to be fair to taxpayers." While gasoline is a significant factor in the mileage figure, other items enter into the calculation of mileage rates, such as depreciation and insurance and other fixed and variable costs. The optional business standard mileage rate is used to compute the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business use in lieu of tracking actual costs. This rate is also used as a benchmark by the federal government and many businesses to reimburse their employees for mileage. The new six-month rate for computing deductible medical or moving expenses will also increase by eight (8) cents to 27 cents a mile, up from 19 cents for the first six months of 2008. The rate for providing services for charitable organizations is set by statute, not the IRS, and remains at 14 cents a mile. The new rates are contained in Announcement 2008-63 on the optional standard mileage rates. Taxpayers always have the option of calculating the actual costs of using their vehicle rather than using the standard mileage rates. Mileage Rate Changes
The RiverFest just keeps getting better and better and 2008 was just the best! We would like to thanks Hanna Stanger and the Portneuf Greenway Foundation crew and all the fantastic volunteers who worked the RiverFest. Joe and I felt it was the best one that Pocatello has ever hosted. We are already planning on being there next year. We are putting on our thinking hats to decide what fun new projects Maxine & Crew will be doing in 2009 at the RiverFest. We are thinking - a kid magic bubble fountion!
Over 300 free necklaces and pet rocks were made by kids thanks to the support of our sponsor - Party Palace - Pineridge Mall, Pocatello. There were over 15 booths with fun things for kids to do for free and lots of other cool activities for the entire family. The music and food was great. So, open up you 2009 computer calendar and put a big star on June 20, 2009 - it is the place for family fun with your budget in mind and a way to support the Portneuf Greenway Foundation and their awesome project that makes living in Pocatello better and better as the years go by! Hugs to all . . . . Maxine It is sponsored by the Idaho State Journal and seems to be a very interesting place. It has general discussions, reciepes, events and lots of other cool and interesting items. I joined after meeting Emily Jones and a lot of the ISJ staff at the Family Fun Day last Saturday. If you did not attend, you might want to consider going next year! Over 15 booths with information, fun, games and lots of prizes! It is so new there are only 3 members - kind of feels like you are talking with yourself! Hehehehe - I put up 3 great food ideas today - firecracker cupcakes (in honor of the 4th of July - we will see you all at the Bannock County Fairgrounds for the Greatest Show in Idaho), fried cornbread, and Southern style pork BBQ - all in honor of us getting to live in the south - South Idaho! hehehehehe Tomorrow is the last day for the High School Rodeo! If you can make it - don't miss it. Starts tomorrow morning at 10am and all the finalists will be showing their stuff. Tonight was really wonderful - good crowds, great foods. really truely fresh cotton candy and the weather was just the best! So if you can make it tomorrow drop on over! The Idaho State Journal has really done a fantastic job on covering this event. They are to be commended. Maxine & Joe Baird |
