My Rant for November 27 2007
Tis the season for going out of control!

Did you know the average person eats 5,000 calories in the holiday meal?
That is significant since the average person's calorie intake should be no more than 1800 in a day!

So what do you do?

Well, if you have made the choice to get healthy and prevent a deluge of disease from visiting you later in life...try these simple things:

  • If you are heading for a dinner or party or somewhere where you know that you are going to over-indulge, eat something before you go, something high in fiber!  Shredded grain cereals, whole grains, those "Fiber-Bar" cereal candy bars I call them.  You need to have at least 20 grams of fiber a day.  After you eat your fiber, make sure you drink  a glass of water, that will help the fiber swell.
When the fiber swells, you won't be as tempted to over eat, your intestinal flora will love you and, because it's fiber, you won't be hungry after about 3 to 4 hours!

  • If you need something sweet, chose treats that are high in fiber and protein, but low or no fat.  My self, i like Odwalla Bars for candy bars.  My kids like them too.  Try fresh fruit or vegetables with a raspberry/Pecan dressing.  Also, there is a wonderful recipe for a Spinach salad with the Raspberry/Pecan dressing on it that your sweet tooth will love!
Fresh Spinach, washed and torn, about 4 cups.
In a fry pan put, a tablespoon of Olive Oil (Not Virgin!) and 1/2 cup of Pecan bits.
When the pan is hot, put in Agave, honey or any other kind of low glycemic sweetener  (Try Xylitol, your teeth will love you!) with the pecans and stir until the nuts and the sweeteners have blended well.
Add  1/2 of a tablespoon of Balsamic Vinegar to the mix and remove from heat.
In the Spinach, add 1 small can of Mandrine Oranges and 1/2 cup of Fresh or Frozen Raspberries(Unsweetened).
When the Pecans have cooled, add them to the Salad.

This salad does not need a salad dressing!

  • Don't drink Alcohol...It will add weight like no other!!!  If you need to be social, drink a mixture of water and fruit juice, cut the fruit juice by 1/3 with water. You'll have flavor, you'll have color, but you won't have the glycemic impact.
  • When I was modeling in New York and LA, a modeling trick for eating less was to eat bites for a mouse.  You'll get the taste, but not the calories.  The bite size should be half of the end of the fork across and down.  You will chew that for 30 seconds before you can swallow.  This will satisfy you quickly, and then you can concentrate on people, and not on food or drink!
  • When you are home and need comfort food to keep you warm at night, try getting a coffee maker and keeping it filled with water.  You may want to keep some lemon juice or lime juice in the fridge.  When you feel like you need something to do while you are watching TV, a move or talking online, try puting some hot water in a cup with some lemon or lime juice and sipping on that.  Personally, I like a unsweetened cup of herbal tea...peppermint from my garden or cinnamon.  The hot water will tell you system that it needs to cleanse, Lemon or Lime juice will help clean fat from the liver, which is always a good thing.
  • Try to stay busy and a way from the TV if you can.  Did you know that you use more energy by sleeping then you do by watching TV?  Anything that you can do with your hands or your mind is a better alternative.  My 19 year old son likes to take his mother for a 2 mile walk after dinner.  My 17 year old Daughter likes mom to help her clean up the kitchen after our homemade dinners.  My Husband likes to make furniture and "mess" with our horses and other animals after dinner.  If you stay busy, food isn't so much an issue anymore, so the calories aren't an issue either!
