Should a police officer who has received a DUI be allowed to keep his or her job?

What do you think?

E. Idaho police officer demoted for DUI conviction

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — An eastern Idaho police officer convicted for driving under the influence of alcohol is getting demoted but will be allowed to keep his job.

Idaho Falls Police Chief Steve Roos announced the discipline Tuesday in the case of Sgt. Bill Squires, a 15-year veteran with the department. Squires was arrested earlier this month and pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor Dec. 8. The police department then conducted an internal investigation of the case.

Roos says Squires will keep his job, but will be demoted from his sergeant position and suspended three weeks without pay. Roos says Squires suffered a lapse in judgment and must deal with some professional consequences.

But Roos also praised Squires for taking full responsibility for his actions, and cooperating with officers at the time of his arrest and investigators.

Why would it be different?
Why should it be different for this officer of the law who writes DUI tickets on others. Even though he will demoted and is going 3-weeks without pay, how can he drive (a county taxpayer owned car) while regular Joe's lose their right to drive for months and then pay through the nose for insurance??

Officers are required to be an example
Now that he has pled guilty and has received his sentence, he was demoted and might be returned to patrol duty. Would it be possible for him to adequately enforce the DUI laws now that he has himself been charged. Is he going to look the other way to assist those who are in a similar situation? In most law enforcement agencies a policy exists that would have terminated the officer. Other officers have been terminated for less offenses. Once he returns to duty the public is fully aware of the fact that he has violated the law and it would be fair to say that there will be those in the public that will voice their own thoughts when he is making contact during enforcement stops and try to use it to their advantage to get out of being charged. He will also have great difficulty in going to court now when Defense Attorneys are representing clients, you can bet that this will be a main topic of discussion during trials.

Come on now
I know that if I was to get a DUI in todays circamstances I would indeed be fired! Now I am not saying we should fire this guy. I think that losing your job because of a drink is a little to much. I am sure this officer's duties included driving. So what. Was he DUI while he was driving his work car? OK then. enough said. What we do on our time away from work is just that, our time to do what we want. We should never fire this guy for this. But we can spend more money to send humans to the moon. 1957 that was cool,I guess. Buts its 2009 people. Who really wants to space walk anymore? Stop spending all this money!!

consequences
he initiated to drink and did not follow all the advice of police campaigns. "we will drive you straight to jail". according to state law, if he did not surrender his license he loses it. if he did he got a slap on the hand and is able to drive, but the moral question for him is does he feel comfortable performing his duties. will he be as strict as he was before or will be leniant? my opinion is he is subject to walking the streets and performing simple citations. demotions mean he was up there and did not follow the rules. reality hurts when its one of their own, now maybe those that wear that badge knows the feeling of being stuffed and cuffed and explain to their family can you come bail me out?

DUI officer
Come on and get real - law enforcement officers are human too... get off you high horses. If a president can suffer a lapse of 'judgement' for oral sex, and a senator kill a young woman in a dui accident and walk, a man or woman who takes full responsibility for their lapse of judgement deserves counseling and etc. and can fulfill his obligations as a LEO.

Enough...

Drunk as a skunk
the officer is sworn to uphold the law! He broke his oath. Sure he can drink. Nothing against the law with that one but when he got behind the wheel he showed that he is not willing to obey the law he is sworn to enforce. The City of Idaho Falls is a laughing stock to keep this joker on the force. 15 years service? how many times did he break the law and get away with it the past 15 years? What other laws is he willing to disregard? Please, the chief has made a poor poor decision.

no
He threatened lives while driving under the influence. If he had pulled a gun and stuck it in somebody's face while off duty, he would have been fired. How is this any different?

DUI
If it were a civilian who received the DUI, they would lose their license. dont fire him, but put him behind a desk and not allow him to drive for the 3 to 6 months that is normally sentenced.
